The York County Planning Commission is holding a public meeting tomorrow (July 26) at 6 p.m. to discuss the new 176 page York County Heritage Preservation Plan. The meeting is at the York County Emergency Services Center (911 Center), 120 Davies Drive in East York. (It is in the neighborhood of the East York Post Office and Pleasant Acres, accessible from Heindel Road and/or Concord Road.)

You can also peruse the comprehensive plan through the YCPC web site and via the YCPC Facebook page. Besides reading the plan, comments can be easily added online. The comment period extends through August 5. It will then be finalized and presented to the York County Commissioners for approval and inclusion in the overall York County Plan. This link will take you to a brief overview of the Heritage Preservation Plan, as well as a link to the entire document.

I have been honored to be part of a steering committee of community members assembled by the YCPC. We have met regularly over the past two years to assist the YCPC staff in their very successful efforts to put together a plan that lays out, in text and graphics, the rich heritage of the county as well as effective tools that can be used to clarify and evaluate preservation needs. The steering committee, made up of nearly 20 persons from all over the county, with various interests and skills, will probably be continuing as an advisory committee as the plan is implemented.

It is exciting to see a basic history of the county, complete with timeline and various maps focusing on subjects such as Native America settlement and early roads, combined in one document along with criteria to evaluate sites and lay the basis for informed action.

This link will take you to a current York Daily Record article on the York County Heritage Preservation Plan.
